Session I: Understanding Tech Dependence

Do you know when your kids are ready for their first phone? Are those learning apps and games for infants and preschoolers good for them or are there unrecognized dangers? When should I start talking to my young children about dangers up on the Internet; and what should I look out for? Is technology helping or hurting your relationships? Based on audience needs surveys and over 10 yrs. of meetings with parents and professionals, this 2-session webinar provides fundamental and more in-depth information on today’s technology challenges. With the presenters skilled ability to adjust the presentation to the audience, individuals will have their specific questions addressed and learn new cutting-edge information. Having presented for high school students, parents and educational and health professionals, this session provides the specific information you need to ask questions and make more informed decisions.

Session II: Managing Tech Dependence

In this second session you will discover how tech use changes the brain, negatively impacts learning, creates disruptive behavior and changes the way we communicate. Learn how texting, social networking, gaming and electronic communications contributes to anxiety, depression, decreased social interactions and even encourages violence. Why is every child today being given an electronic device in their elementary, middle or high school? Discover how technology negatively impacts sleep, learning and the potential for success. Learn how to improve individual and family relationships, and what parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals can do to better cope with this issue.

Presenter: John K Kriger, MSM, LCADC, CPS

Bio: John is a nationally and internationally recognized keynote and content expert speaker, author, and consultant. With over 30 years of experience, his engaging and dynamic presentations continue to engage, delight and enlighten his audiences.

A frequent guest on radio and TV, he is a sought-after speaker for state and national conferences. For the past 10 years he has been a frequent National Association of School Nurses conference speaker providing the opening keynote at the 2014 NASN Conference in San Antonio, TX. In 2018 he was awarded the NASN President’s Recognition Award for “your far reaching, continued support and unique contributions to NASN”.

As President of Kriger Consulting, Inc., John specializes in the health services arena. He speaks and consults with health care agencies, hospitals, schools, treatment programs and agencies on Tech Dependence, Advocacy Through Public Speaking, Audience Engagement, Transformational Leadership, and Goal Achievement. John has worked with well over 700 organizations and 200,000 individuals nationally and internationally with consistent re-bookings.

A 13-year faculty member at the Johnson & Johnson and Rutgers School Health Leadership Institute, and a 25+ year faculty at the Rutgers Center for Alcohol Studies, and School Of Social Work Office of Continuing Education, John consistently evaluates in the top 5%. He is a faculty member for the North Eastern University’s School Health Academy and former Visiting Professor at Beijing Normal University in Beijing, China.

John is the author of, The Pond: A Small Book About Making Big Changes, which was a required reading for the Johnson and Johnson School Health Leadership Institute. His second book, Turned On & Tuned Out, is a guide to understanding and managing technology dependence. His third book is currently in process and deals with impact of technology on mental health issues, violence, suicide, trafficking and predatory behavior.

He holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Human Services, a Masters of Science Degree in Management and is a NJ Licensed Clinical Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselor, a Nationally Certified Prevention Specialist and a New Jersey State Police trained Sexual Abuse Specialist.

▪ Itemize three actions you can take to reduce over stimulation in preschool and elementary students
▪ Relate four strategies professionals can initiate with parents and foster parents to reduce the potential for acting out, anxiety and depression
