Meltdowns and Behaviour: Adelaide - June, 13, 2020

Social-emotional development in children can cause many headaches to therapists, teachers and parents alike. Every emotional response has a trigger and it can be so difficult to tease out the “why” in order to plan the most appropriate response. Join Maude as she takes you through a journey of social-emotional child development and provide countless pointers of insight into children’s behavior. She will cover the thoughts of different theorists’, as well simplify the “how to deal with it” in one recipe that could be applied in multiple different situations. Nothing is a “magic bullet”, but she shares a method with her audience that can make life considerably easier over time. Maude’s approach comes from knowledge of development, behavior as well as respect for what both the child and the adult goes through. She is practical in her approach and believes that “if a child could, he/she would”. Her golden nuggets can be used in the clinic setting, the classroom and at home. Children are more stressed today in our higher paced society and more pressure is placed upon them at increasingly younger ages. Use this course to take a step back and reflect on your practice and understanding, even as you also gain practical tips that you can start using the next day. This is not a workshop you want to miss.

  • 15.45 to 17.00 – The Meltdown Recipe
  1. List at least 5 theorists and their impact on understanding emotional behavior
  2. Review the impact of having emotional difficulties on social function and behavior
  3. Describe the impact of early attachment and emotional development on social behavior
  4. Discover one “meltdown recipe” that will ease the strength of meltdown behavior as well as frequency in meltdown occurrences
