Description: Sensory Modulation is a topic within which we can frequently find misunderstanding and confusion when also confronted with emotional dysregulation. We know we need to separate the concepts, though there is so much overlap and consideration in critical clinical thinking of the discerning therapist. On this day we will do a brief overview of different profiles in modulation and discuss assessment, intervention and clinical thinking considering individual profiles and neurodiversity. The tendency to label children in diagnostic categories or as “behavior disorders” is a strong practice in medicine as well as education today. Parents are being shifted backwards and forwards from one opinion to the other. Techniques are tried and let go, and through it all, the child’s eyes are upon us. The child does not want to feel out of control yet is feeling helpless as to what is not available to feel in control. These sessions will look at what the literature and practice is saying about modulation from an occupational therapy perspective. Maude will also cover what the literature is saying about emotional regulation and how these two aspects overlap in our understanding of child behavior. This short course will inspire your thinking and provide practical tips and ideas for professionals as well as parents.

• Define emotional regulation including using co-regulation to achieve self-regulation

• Identify the important role of sleep in supporting modulation / regulation
• List at least 10 observation of a play session that will support your hypothesis
• Describe the impact of modulation / regulation on picky eating behavior
• List 20+ activity ideas to support modulation

Presenter: Maude Le Roux, OTR/L, SIPT, DIR/Floortime Expert Trainer

Bio: Maude Le Roux is an occupational therapist with an extensive following of professionals across the globe. She completed the SIPT training in 2002. Sensory integration forms the foundation from which she continues to develop different tracks of assessment and intervention. Maude is certified in multiple different techniques that she applies uniquely through her Developmental Pathways Model (DPM). She owns and directs a clinical practice in Glen Mills, PA, where she has become known for her effective assessment and intervention protocol. Maude owns and directs A Total Approach with a team consisting of occupational therapists, speech language pathologists and DIR/Floortime providers. She gives back to her community by serving on different boards and currently serves on the Board of Directors for ATTACh, a national organization dedicated to serve families and children with attachment related difficulties and trauma informed care. She co-authored the book “Our Greatest Allies” in 2011 with Lauren O’Malley describing the journey of one child on the autism spectrum. Maude opened her online academy in 2019 from where she trains professionals and parents globally in her assessment and intervention protocol, thoughts, and ideas.
